The Sawbrush House is a residence in the North Okanagan designed with a primary program spread across a single main level. The plan separates into two distinct wings, linked by a fully glazed entry that acts as both a circulation spine and a transparent connection to the surrounding landscape. Structurally, the home is defined by a long-span steel and CLT floor system paired with a one-sided steel moment frame that provides stability while opening uninterrupted views out over Kalamalka Lake. A striking sawtooth roof profile employs prefabricated wood truss elements for efficiency and cost-effectiveness, infilled with conventional light wood framing. This form not only creates an angled surface ideal for solar panels but also introduces abundant daylight into the interior through clerestory glazing.

Horizon Residential development in Langford includes two 5 storey wood frame buildings over concrete podiums as well as a single storey wood frame amenity building. To suit the existing rock topography, detailed strucutral design was required to integrate the podium structure into the site rock profiles. The project will provide 160 units of housing to the growing region.

The Ascent residential development in Kelowna features four five-storey wood-frame buildings over concrete podiums, along with a single-storey wood-frame amenity building. To accommodate the existing rock topography, R+A Engineering provided detailed structural design to integrate the podium structures seamlessly into the site’s rock profiles. Once complete, the project will deliver 298 new housing units to Kelowna’s growing Upper Mission region.

Genesis 2.0 is a 48-studio unit supportive housing development in Kamloops, featuring a three-storey wood-frame structure over a main floor podium structure. Careful structural planning ensured the podium supports the upper levels while providing safe, open, and accessible spaces for residents. The building is operated by CMHA Kamloops.

The Power Street Child Care project adds 80 much-needed spaces for families in Penticton, expanding child care access within the existing Community Centre site. The new facility is carefully integrated into the centre’s courtyard, requiring thoughtful coordination of new foundations with the existing building’s structural systems. The structure is primarily steel-framed, highlighted by a whimsical, flowing exposed steel canopy that provides both function and character to the outdoor spaces. The result will be a welcoming, safe, and resilient environment for children to grow, play, and learn.

The new childcare facilities at Skaha Elementary and Summerland Middle School provide space for 148 children across various programs and age groups. The design incorporates a conventional light wood frame (LWF) structure, highlighted by heavy timber entry canopies and open interior spaces.

Eagle Valley Seniors Housing project provides 39-units of supportive housing for seniors in Sicamous, featuring a four-storey wood-frame structure with main floor amenity space. Careful structural planning ensured the main floor open amenity spaces supported the upper levels while providing safe, open, and accessible spaces for residents.

The new 2000m3 water reservoir designed for the City of Endery will replace the exisitng lower reservoir to meet the future demands of the city. The reservoir is designed with reinforced concrete construciton, utilizing Xypex waterproofing systems.

OMAHS is a 48-unit supportive housing development in Kelowna, featuring a five-storey wood-frame structure over a one-storey partialy below grade concrete podium. Careful structural planning ensured the podium supports the upper levels while providing safe, open, and accessible spaces for residents. The building is operated by Okanagan Metis and Aboringinal Housing Society.

Cedarstoke is the newest addition to Monashee Estates at Revelstoke Mountain Resort, a 10,000 sf residence that combines scale with finely tuned detailing. The structure is primarily light wood frame paired with a heavy timber truss roof system, designed to showcase craftsmanship while achieving long spans. Large double-height glazing, supported by slim steel profiles, opens the home to mountain views while maintaining a refined aesthetic. Insulated concrete formwork was used for the garage suspended slab, and extensive detailing was required to resolve the complex roof geometry and ensure structural clarity throughout.

An extensive renovation of a 1970s lakeside home on Okanagan Lake, creating a refreshed design while respecting the original structure. The project included expansive glazing along the lakefront, requiring updates to the home’s lateral and gravity framing systems to maintain structural integrity. The upper floor ceiling was vaulted with new beam work, enhancing the sense of openness, while a lightweight hydronic heating system was introduced to minimize added weight and maximize reuse of existing framing members. Careful detailing ensured the structure remained clean and unobtrusive.

Obsidian Stairs is a two-storey feature stair engineered with a central scissor stringer and plate stringers, anchored by a solid steel node at the mid-height landing. The landing is supported by a tension tie composed of steel and aluminum pickets, creating a visually light yet structurally robust system. R+A worked closely with the One Sixty Fourth Design to provide specialty engineering services, ensuring the stair maintained clean lines, transparency, and precise performance while serving as a sculptural centerpiece of the space.

Careful structural planning ensured the podium supports the upper levels while providing safe, open, and accessible spaces for residents and parking. The building is operated by CMHA Kelowna.

This 5-storey, 17-unit residential development features a wood-frame structure above a partially underground concrete parking podium, providing open, efficient living spaces. The design ensures structural integrity while accommodating large residential units and rooftop amenities.

After significant structural damage was discovered during renovations of the existing gym in 2021, R+A Engineering worked with the project team and school district to design and construct a new gymnasium complex for Pleasant Valley Secondary School. The new addition includes a full-size gym, a second-floor fitness facility, as well as multi-purpose student commons areas.

Gateview Airport Park is a 41,000 SF industrial complex in Kelowna, BC, featuring precast tilt-up concrete walls supporting an OWSJ roof system. Heavy timber canopies add architectural character while integrating seamlessly with the structural design. The combination of concrete, steel joists, and timber creates a functional and visually striking industrial facility.
